In 1998, the Adopt a Country Road Program was begun. It was approved in the Parker

County Commissioners Court, under then County Judge Ben Long. It became a Free Standing

Affiliate recognition with Keep Texas Beautiful, in Austin,Texas. The way the program

works is for County Road adoption areas only. County residents, churches, companies

and commercial institutions request an area. The program requires a Chairman, with

duties of receiving phone communications, from potential adoptee's for 2 mile stretches,

out in the county.

An agreement form is mailed by the Chairman to requested participants on county

roads, for a litter removal adoption area. The Chairman receives the signed form

back in the mail, and keeps a copy, then mails the original to the Commissioner in one,

of four precincts.

The Commissioner then orders 2 signs, designating the family, or organization of the

area. The signs are placed by the precinct at each end of the adopted road area. Safety

reflective vests and trash bags are issued to the adoptee's, for 6 pickups a year. Two

years is the minimal time for adoption areas, although many continue their adoption for

many years. Safety precautions are important for all adoptee's, and a minimum age is

suggested. The full trash bags are picked up at an intersection location, for pickup after the

event. The Agreement form has all the legal information, for potential volunteer adoptee's.

The Chairman of the program takes a picture of the adoption family or group, then has it

published in local newspapers. This generates more adoptions in Parker County.

The residents and various organizations, take pride in clean Right of Ways where they reside.

It also saves taxpayer dollars, and protects the watershed and creeks. It's also
environmentally friendly.

Adopt a Country Road Litter Removal, received Commendation Certificates from the Texas

State House of Representatives and State Senate, for the first County Road Litter pickup program in Texas, in 2002.
